David Foster Hits Golden Buzzer for Filipino Gerphil Flores
Gerphil Geraldine Flores earned a huge favor on her first performance in Asia’s Got Talent after judge David Foster gave her a golden buzz for her to go straight to the show’s semifinals in Marina Bay Sands, Singapore.
Gerphil first appeared on TV when she joined the first season of Pilipinas Got Talent in 2010. The show was won by singer Jovit Baldivino, and the break dancing crew who also advanced in this season’s Asia’s Got Talent, Velasco Brothers, got the second place. Gerphil, on the other hand, fell short as a semifinalist on the said show as it was deemed that Filipinos are more inclined to pop music than opera singing, which is the genre Gerphil ventures to.
The twenty-four-year old is from Parañaque City. She is a big fan of classic songs, and she started singing kundiman when she was eight years old. She shared that her music is inspired by pop-classical singer Josh Groban and opera singer Andrea Bocelli. She also dreamed of performing in The Metropolitan opera house in New York or in La Scala in Milan, Italy.
Gerphil got all the right notes when she sang the song from the all-time favorite movie The Godfather “Speak Softly Love” for her AGT performance. The song is also called “The Godfather Love Theme” and was originally recorded by Andy Williams. According to singer and producer Foster, Gerphil did not disappoint anybody in the room with her solid performance. He further commended her for the great pitch, which was in perfect tune.
Taiwanese pop star Van Ness Wu thinks Gerphil can perform in musicals like Les Miserables with her powerful operatic voice, while judge Melanie C couldn’t even tell a hint of nerves when she hit the high notes. All four judges said yes to her impressive performance, and Foster went as far as hitting the golden buzzer for all good reasons.
Gerphil Flores is the second Filipino contender who got the golden buzzer in the show after the judges were swept off their feet with El Gamma Penumbra’s amazing shadow play.
There is no telling where Gerphil can go with her amazing voice and the opportunity that Asia’s Got Talent will bring her in the international stage, but everyone hopes that she will succeed in bringing operatic singing in the mainstream.David Foster Hits Golden Buzzer for Filipino Gerphil Flores by Holly Bissonnette
