Cebuano Teen Jesse Dann Barretto to Represent PH at WCOPA
Meet Jesse Dann Barretto, a 19-year-old tourism student from the University of Cebu (UC), who was chosen to represent the country at the World Championships of Performing Arts (WCOPA) in the voice with accompaniment category along with a few other performers.
It was Barretto’s friend, who is a WCOPA silver medalist, who told him to audition. He declined at first as he was not interested. He doesn’t even know what the competition is about at the time. But two days before the audition, Barretto’s friend called again; and this time, he heeded his friend’s advice.
Unlike most musicians, Jesse Dann Barretto had no formal training nor attended a single workshop in music. His family’s interest in music is limited to karaoke singing at home. In his interview with Cebu Daily News, Barretto said that his love for singing started when he began attending church service. This is also where he learned how to play musical instruments through listening and observing and also with the help of a mentor at their church.
When Jesse Dann Barretto found out that he was chosen as one of the representatives to the World Championships of Performing Arts (WCOPA) in the voice with accompaniment category, he was surprised at the same time elated.
According to him, not everyone can participate in this competition because singing while playing an instrument is not easy to do it as it divides the performer’s attention. But WCOPA Philippine national director Gerry Mercado is confident with Jesse’s talent. Mercado believes they have a good chance to win the award.
One of the successful Filipino performers in this competition is Jed Madela, who was named Grand Champion Performer of the World in 2005.
Currently, Jesse is refining his performance in preparation for the said upcoming WCOPA competition that will be held from June 30 to July 19 in Hollywood, California, where about 60 countries across the globe are expected to take part. He’s to compete for five categories including gospel, original composition, rock, open category, and variety in the said contest.
He’s also appealing to the public for financial support to fund the expenses for his trip as the organization is not going to shoulder the cost 100 percent.
“Lisod kay subsidized ang expenses [It’s so hard because the expenses are subsidized], it’s not totally free. I am still looking for sponsors to help me get through the competition. I already got support from relatives and friends, but it is still not enough,” he said.Cebuano Teen Jesse Dann Barretto to Represent PH at WCOPA by Holly
