Maxene Magalona’s Transformation to Francis M. Brings Tears

Holly Bissonnette | April 29, 2015

It was an emotional performance for Maxene Magalona in the show Your Face Sounds Familiar as she brought tears to the crowd and the judges themselves when she transformed into Francis Magalona, her own father.

Maxene sang one of her father’s hit songs “Mga Kababayan Ko” during the show, and videos of her late father are shown on the screen at the back, which reminded everyone about the legacy Francis M. built in the local music industry.

One of the judges, singer Jed Madela, noted that the memory of Francis M. lived because of her and further commented that his father is one of the most iconic Filipino performers in the country.

Judge Gary Valenciano was reminded by the videos shown on screen with the moment Francis M. made a guest performance on one of his shows before, and he went emotional the whole time Maxene impersonated her own father.

Box-office queen Sharon Cuneta tearfully recalled the moment she sent Francis M. a text message when she knew he was sick. Sharon dismissed the idea that Maxene nailed the performance because she is the daughter of Francis M. She noted that for her, it was a perfect impersonation by Maxene.

Francis M., hailed the father of Pinoy hip-hop, was the first Filipino rapper to cross over into the mainstream in the Philippines and gave birth to Pinoy rock, making way to Filipino rappers. On August 2008, he was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia and died the year after due to multiple organ failure.
